Samsung on Wednesday announced the launch of the official app dedicated to this year’s Winter Olympic Games, called PyeongChang 2018 Official App. Since the service effectively provides coverage of both the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the associated Paralympic Games, there is a ton of content to unpack. There are also a lot of built-in features intended to make getting the latest news and even actively cheering teams or individuals on easier. The app was developed by PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) and Samsung is providing wireless communications and computing equipment required to make the app possible.

Samsung may have already been beaten to the punch with regard to providing VR coverage for the games but that doesn’t mean this app won’t have a lot to offer. To begin with, the app lets users set their own local time zone so that they can receive updates on events in real-time, as well as data about athletes and updates on current medal standing. Users can also get access to headline news from events and information about tickets and the venue. That includes detailed introductions to both venues and events that are less known. Venue introductions will include a 3D view of the locale and drone footage. Push notifications are available for user-set favorite events, countries, or athletes. Additionally, there is a new real-time cheering feature, bringing a social aspect to this year’s Winter Games. users will be able to cheer with comments and emoticons, plus get messages from around the world for those events in the form of an LED cheer screen shown on their device. For those attending the event itself, there are also features to help travelers understand PyeongChan’s local culture and navigate various regions of South Korea. That includes traffic and transportation updates, as well as information about local stores, ticket purchasing, and accommodations. Outbound links from the app will also help visitors find other helpful information about the region and games.

Meanwhile, the application is completely free to download and use, with no in-app purchases to speak of and a relatively small file size at just over 37MB. It’s also available in English, Korean, French, Japanese, and Chinese. Anybody who’s into the Olympic games should have no reason not to check it out for themselves by referring to the Google Play Store banner below.
