Internet Nanny Software Planned for PS3

Are you worried that your child could use their PSP or PS3 system to order sexy Russian brides online with daddy's credit card? Well, you should be. Luckily, Sony and Trend Micro have you covered with their new paid blocking software called Total Web Security. Trend Micro is proposing to charge PS3 owners a one-time fee of £14.95 for a filter that will prevent users from accessing dangerous or X-rated content on the PS3. For a bundled price of £26.95 (US !), they will throw in a similar service to cover the PSP browser as well. The service will be available in 17 languages globally starting on May 11, 2009, and can be downloaded from Sony's PSN.

The content-blocking software will not only prevent kids from entering personally-identifiable information or credit cards into untrustworthy websites. It will also take most of the fun out of Internet surfing in general. According to the manufacturer,

"When the user accesses websites from PS3 or PSP, URL filtering technology is used to block access to websites classified as belonging to certain categories (Adult/Sex, Cults/The Occult, Gambling, Crime, Illegal Drugs, Alcohol/Tobacco, Sex Education, Weapons/Military and Violence/Discrimination etc), thereby reducing the risk of children accessing harmful websites."

We're not sure that you can put a price on good parenting, but £26.95 is definitely not it. Believe us when we say that there are ways to get around just about any filter imaginable, and the clunky PSP browser is hardly the place where we're likely to access any websites at all, let alone illicit ones. Save your money and supervise your kids' online time by yourselves, parents.
